SHOGUN

SHOGUN Teaser

I was tasked with interpreting key moments from the TV series and developing Momiyama (1573-1615) period inspired screen paintings. These rooms were often dimly lit and the light from a flickering candle would have created a sensual, textural, glittering effect over the gold leaf, in contrast to the matte, earthy tones of the paint. The client was a Japanese art history enthusiast and wanted the work to feel as authentic as possible. For added authenticity and copyright concerns, all work was completely hand painted with no stock/AI imagery used.

TEASER ALTS (UNspecified PERIOD)

Before we fully invested into the Momiyama Period, we tried other styles, such as Ukiyo-E, mixed with Western style painting, as represented by the use of realistic perspective. In the end we realized that it wasn’t worthwhile to invent a new style of painting, when we could instead mine the rich history and beautiful abstraction of the Momiyama period.
